Our Skin Storytime: A First Conversation About Race

Brooklyn Public Library — Virtual

What color is your skin? What skin colors do you notice in your community, or in your family? Join BPL's Jessica Ralli, co-author of the new bestselling board book Our Skin: A First Conversation About Race for a storytime and activity that starts an important conversation about skin color, stereotypes, race, racism, and activism. While young children are avid observers and questioners of their world, adults often shut down or postpone conversations on complicated topics because it’s hard to know where to begin. Research shows that talking about issues like race from the age of two not only helps children understand what they see, but also increases self-awareness, self-esteem, and allows them to recognize and confront things that are unfair, like discrimination and prejudice. Jessica will be joined by one (or more) special guests, and will be available for Q and A in the comments on Facebook! All are welcome! Geared toward children ages 2-7 and their parents and caregivers.
